For a few dollars you can get a plug and play wiring kit, just unplug the wiring near the driver's side taillight and plug the trailer wiring inline.

White is ground, brown for park lamps, green is right brake/turn, yellow is left brake/turn.
Does your XJ have separate turn signals in the rear (red brake, amber turn)? If so, you will need a converter (available from NAPA, etc.).
If your brake/turn operate from the same bulb, all you need to do is wire your ground to the body, brown to the park wire (usually use the left taillamp), yellow to the brake/turn on the left, and you will have to tap in to the right brake/turn with the green (possibly at the right taillamp unless you can find the wire going to it nearer to your other connections). Just probe the connectors with a test light to verify which is which as I don't have the wiring colors for the Jeep.
The wiring colors for the trailer wiring are universal (at least they're supposed to be - you should make sure the trailer is wired to match or you may end up with blown fuses!).
Hope this helps you............J.P.

Hmmm....I'll have to take a look at the plug and play for my XJ, I have the seperate turn/brake so the wiring must have the converter built in. Think it was around $25 from some place in Burnside.

I think you are going to find that the only way you can wire your jeep is to get the plug and play . The 97 + xj's don't do well trying to make those cheap , wire yourself plugs , work . I think you need a 5 into 4 box , then the 4 wire plug , but I don't remember for sure , it was the reason I got the plug and play
