Frigged around this weekend with the 04 GM, put about 450 km on it some city, some highway (300 km) saw about 16MPG.
Besides changing gears, driving style and droppping the tailgate anyone have any experience with increasing their mileage. Reading online people are hitting 22 on the highway.
Wondering if anyone has any experience with the following options I'm looking at.
Superchips Cortex (approx 500.00) K&N cold air kit (475.00) K&N Filter (75.00)
We put the Cortex Chip in the 6.0 at work and got a 5 MPG gain right off the bat. Paid for itself in a short time.
Anyone have any thoughts.
I'm not worried about power gains but they are nice.

well droping the tailgate will not get you no more mpg. put a k&n col air kit on the old mans truck and he gets 25 mpg with that. 2000 gmc with 4.6L in it

When I had a deck cover or the tailgate off on the ranger I always got better mileage (and I check every tank)
All extraneous variables aside, with my pretty constant work routine when I had the deck lid on or the tailgate removed I got 1~2 MPG more than the same routine with the tailgate on.
This was in a 1993 4.0L ranger driven like I have no points left, being followed by a cop whilst transporting a inordinate amount of ilicit substances.

aerodynamics of every vehicle will be different. A friend of mine ran an old Dodge back and forth to school when I was in College. He'd go one tank with the gate on, one off, and switch back and forth just to try to eliminate any factor the weather/temperature outside may have had on engine performance. He too noticed a difference with the gate off vs. on. He ended up getting on of those nylon mesh gates and it actually gave worse mileage than the real tail gate

The Cummins gets between 8-10 MPG carrying a 3000 lb camper and towing a 6700 lb trailer @ 100 KPH. She returns about 14 MPG empty.
Has Banks Exhaust as only mod to date. Banks CAI and Ram Air intake coming.
I run a full soft tonneau cover outside of camper season.

ok. does everyone use canadian, or us gallons? that'll make a big difference...
driving style makes the most difference, along with filters, and general wear items.
i don't belive myth busters on this one, they used 4 door trucks with a 5 foot box. try a regular cab, long box. i know it used to make a difference in my 79..... small difference, but there was one

I always used US gallons as the literature from the states should be in US gallons. Using Imperial galons makes you feel better though.
