So, new coil, plug wires, plugs, gas tank sending unit, rear diff fluid and oil change today... Which item on this list would be responsible for me no longer having wipers...? Wipers don't work - any speed and no fluid pump coming on either...there doesn't even appear to be a fuse for these items oin the underdash fuse panel (89 Comanche)...as it was the first place I looked. Very queer... Thoughts? Oh yeah, they worked fine on the drive to the garage this morning... ...and to be clear, I do not believe this to be in any way related to the work the gents at APJ's performed for me. The truck runs smoother after my tune up and fluid changes, and as always, I trust their work and word implicitly...well, maybe not Matt's, but you know...

There should be a fuse for the wiper, it may be combined with one of the others or it could be in the box under the hood.
Just grabbed my owner's manual, the wiper/washer is the 5.5amp breaker in slot 20. Far left below the flasher under the dash. I have no idea how you reset it though.

Duane - you sparked an item that I been putting off for some time. The rear wiper on the Grand Cherokee, does a quick burst, about one to two inches of wipe then stops. If some time later you try it again, it jumps an inch or so and stop again. It is getting power. Is this a sign that the motor is burnt out or does someone know of the problem and cure. Thanks. not meaning to hijack your topic.

Those motors Eddie were and still are very prone to rust on the shaft. I took mine apart and lubed it and away it went, then it seized again and that was all she wrote. They are very, very expensive. If the gear inside, which is plastic is not shot it would be worth rebuilding it. I got a quote of over 200 from Mopar for a motor. I'm going to pull mine apart some day and have a look again.

For 200 hundred I'll dismantle the whole Jeep first. I'll wait for warmer weather, then pull things apart. Thanks Kevin

Thanks Andre It will take awhile until the weather warms up, my old bones don't work at minus 10. Come to think of it they don't work at all. Been retired for 5 years.

Duane;
I had a similar incident which I note because perhaps this is a common problem or, as we say, 'bug'.
My daughter was scheduled to have her tonsils and adenoids (sp?) out last week. So we get everything ready, and in the morning (5:30am!) I go out and start the XJ to warm it up. It is out there warming up for like 15 minutes. Keep in mind that I am trying to get my daughter to the hospital on time without having to wake the rest of the clan, and that we just had the snow storm, so the roads are an absolute mess.
So anyway, we take the girl out to the car, get ready to go, and the wipers won't work. Exactly as you described. I tried everything I could think of to get them working, and this had never happened before. Trust me, I was 'fonzing' the dash board ALOT!
So I give up, wake everyone up, bundle them all up, get them into the truck, now we are likely going to be late...... go to start the XJ again, and now the wipers are working again!
The only reason I can think of is that the freezing rain froze some contact somewhere, and it took a while to thaw out. Not sure though, gonna have to keep an eye on it.
Or maybe the motor's f'cked... just not FULLY f'cked yet!

That's pretty much my deal too Chad. I tried wiggling the wiper arms to see if maybe the motor was frozen - didn't matter.
I understand there's a control box for the delay function - that's likely my problem - so I'll have to source another one.
Yet another "Jeep" thing to understand...LOL

Had the same prob with the front wiper motor that Ed seems to be having with his rear on his ZJ, work alittle then stop, or work alot then stop. Checked all the connectionsn and they were good. Took out the motor, didn't look to bad, cleaned it anyway. Put, it back in, worked fine, couple days later it blew a fuse. Took the motor out again, checked over again. This time I took the cover off and checked the plastic gears. The grease that was in it was all hardened up and the gears wouldn't turn. Cleaned the old grease out and filled it full of lubraplate. Worked fine ever since. This all took place in the summer, so the grease didn't freeze up, just dried up.

Now that ppl are mentioning wipers I have a question about mine. Is there a way to set the sweep arc? Ever since I got the XJ the wiper arc has been extreamly wide. The passenger side always hits the window frame at the bottom and the driver side the same on the side. After the 8 yrs that I have owned it the wipers have made groves in the crome window frame and I have gone through wipers like crazy. Anybody have any thoughts on this one?
On another note has anyone tried those new low profile wiper blades at Canadian Tire. Look pretty cool and no hinges to get clogged with ice and snow. If they are any good it looks like a good buy.
