OK, so how much is too much?
I've noticed as the weather turned colder, I'm hearing more rocker ticking (at least that's what I think it is, so that's what I'll call it for the sake of this post - I AM GUESSING, NOT DIAGNOSING...LOL - but I'm pretty sure my "guess" is close...)
Anyway, upon start up I hear it - after the motor warms up it's volume changes - goes away a bit. Sometimes it's not even there at all. There are even times, when still cold, that I can hear it OVER my tires on the roads - not on the highway, but in my neighborhood - slowere speeds.
It comes and goes randomly when the engine is warmed up.
So, how much is too much - are we talking constant and LOUD clatter means it's pooched? Or do I just need to get used to this as it's my own engine's personality. I know the 4.0 in my 94 Cherokee didn't do this to this degree - sounded like a diesel at times, but no clattering.
Do I need a new motor...?

It's not uncommon with the 4l. You probably have a sticky lifter or two. it is unlikely to be fatal. John

Just curious what grade oil you are running? do you have an oil pressure gauge? a mechanical oil pressure gauge would give a good hint of what's going on. if it's within spec then don't worry too much.
maybe go to one step lighter oil for the winter?
Not recommending you spend any money but I like synthetic oils. If an engine is shot, then it's a waste of money and a bandaid solution at best but it does quiet down ticking and whatever on my old 2.9, especially on cold morning starts.

Well, I can't directly answer this other than to say I trust the guys at APJ's 100% when it comes to my Jeeps maintenance and health - so if they're not suggesting a grade change in oil, it's not happening. I do know they use Mopar stuff, so it's basically factory. As for a gauge...oh please...that's still in the hint of a dream stage right now...LOL Damn idiot gauges in my 89 Comanche. I am planning a swap, but it seems other areas are always taking attention away from the fun stuff...it's a Jeep thing...LOL So for me, no oil pressure gauge. I do, also, put more than a little stock into what the man, jjcan, has to say - he's been known to ramble on about Jeep items quite accurately. Thanks for the feedback guys. I think for now I'll just "DRIVE the DAMN thing" as I was once told by someone I have come to trust quite a bit. Just so you know, under, I'm not busting on your ideas here - I just have faith in my boys at the shop.

I'm trying to be careful about what I say because my experiences are less Jeep specific. It's just common practice on any engine with some mileage on it that you can help it along by changing oil grades either way (sometimes). One 4l may be perfectly happy with 10/30 all year round and one may like 10/40...by "like" I mean make less noise, depending on how it's worn over time. Not recommending you spend any money at all...

Try a bottle of Lucas oil treatment. Trust me on this.... I have a question about that stuff. What does it do? From what I can tell it just changes the viscosity of the oil. isn't that something that can be done by using a different grade in the first place? if I'm wrong...tell me. I

Try turning up the stereo. It is amazing what noises that will get rid of. AND IT DOES NOT COST ANYTHING EITHER.

It's pretty common for any engine to have a bit of lifter noise in really cold weather until they warm up good. 4.0 seem to be prone to noisy lifters, just ask Blake. He's had all the parts to change his lifters for about a year and a half, but we haven't gotten around to it yet. He's got a couple that really clack for a while after he starts it, even in the summer.
Lucas is great stuff, and it does more than just change the viscosity. I've seen it instantly stop ticking lifters, lower oil operating temperature, and ruduce oil consumpsion.

Yes that is true Rob, but then you end up in a position like me who listens to it way too loud for way too long and you dont hear your Jeep slowly falling apart! ;D
Anywho, lifter rattle is nothing to worry about, ive heard of too many people trying to rid thier 4.0L of that noise and it still comes back!
