Picking up a 2001 2500 Dodge 5.9L, what areas should I be paying particular attention to? Is there a local (NS) site about non Jeep 4x4s, not that this will be any sort of trail machine ;D.

Front coil spring buckets like to rot off and check to see when the plugs were changed last,if not done for a while they will rust into the head and head removal is needed to get them out . Also rust under the hood around the grill .

ya, they shit the bed in 97 when goin to the electronic solenoid shift auto trans..... My folks had a 92 Dak with 5.2L had twice the balls their 97 fullsize with same engine and supposedly same trans........ electronic controllers for the trans made the trans shift all car like n sucked the life out of the engine. Probably something to do with the torque convertor too....

I towed about 10,000 with the identical truck as you have with no complaints. Keep on top of the maintenence though. I passed inspection one year and needed 2500.00 of work to pass the next year.

Thanks for the replies. By plugs, is the poster referring to "Glow plugs", this truck is a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel. It was in to Kentville Dodge last week for a complete going over, only code in memory was for a turbo over speed over 250 starts ago. I'm not sure what the tranny model is, just a 4 spd auto. (R47E maybe?) Its got a Dana 60 front and a Dana 70 rear with limited slip. 4x4 of course.

i have one, and we service quite a few of these. front ends will be a regular thing. my truck only has 96k on it and on my 3rd set of ball joints. buy life time parts. rust on the front fenders can be a problem. fenders are welded on and are a pain to change. 24V cummins and known for the lift pump to fail causing injector pump failure. check to see when its or if its been done.
great work trucks, my buddy has 3, one has 1.1 million kms on the original motor but its a 12V which is stronger

i have a 94 , 12 valve with 447000km on it, had to rebuild the tranny and the front fenders are starting to rust, other than that it works great.

X 30 on the front end problems.

Thanks for all the info guys, looking forward to picking it up this week. Guess I'll be pricing a transfer/lift pump, just in case. It'll be getting an extra thorough going over for corrosion, kinda what I do all day on the Sea Kings . What is the stuff thats put into diesel fuel so "Gunk" doesn't start growing if it sits a while? I think its called a "Biocide". Is it anything like Stabil for gas? Looks like CVO will be selling me toys for this now as well as the YJ Bob
