Not nearly as elaborate as some of the projects going on here now but ...it's something  I had some time to work on Nicks rack for the xj today . Had this done before x-mas Sized for a 33/12.5/15 Today i started the side bars ,4 bars on the passenger side and 2 bars in the back . 2 bars on the driver's side for jack mounting and none in the front to leave room for lights total height is 7" so the tire fits down in the basket nicely . 2 cross bars on the bottom just outside a 15" rim size so when the tire is strapped down it's on the rubber and not the rim Nick will probably invest in a high-lift so i made some mounts for it now . Drilled 1/2" holes threw the tube for a 1/2" rod welded on both sides of the tube with Teflon locking nuts. Test fit with my jack to check for "creepy" level another hour or so i should have the rack done but i need a couple measurements from nick ....or do i ... neighbor has an xj guinea pig

Yup, jack looks straight. Should look good all painted up! its not too big and ungainly looking. sometimes they get like that.

The mesh might be a good idea. It would help keep any spare parts or whatever from falling through the bottom of the rack. Attachments:

yes on the mesh. maybe some light tabs on the bottom runners so if you mount ligths they don't stick up over the basket.
i used to like having a single white light facing rear on the back driver's corner too, on its own switch. put a tab there while you got the rack on the ground. stick your head out the driver door and you can see that back corner backing up. and its good for flashing tailgaters.

a bit more done this morning until the rain started :X Front basket for putting small stuff like a cooler /tool box or parts ...whatever you need. geeze , i counted 263 spot welds for this and i'm sure i missed a few . Mesh is 1" squares. Still needs mounting brackets and light tabs .....maby Nick can do the light tabs , he got a welder for x-mas . I thought about the rear light on one corner ,really helps a lot .

Looks great. maybe weigh it before you put it on the roof. How will it be attached!? ps: this is a perfect first post for the 'light duty fab' section up in the Jeep section. Brought to you by FORD. I'm movin' it!

Looking good Allen. I left work last night and got behind a really slow compact car. What do I see in my rear view but a JK with his driving lights on coming behind me about twice as fast as I was going. Of course he rides right up to my bumper before hitting the brakes. Once he saw the car ahead of me he backed off. Anyway, I was frantically trying to find something to flash at him.

I'm movin' it! Thanks for moving it , i wasn't sure which one to put it in . I will weigh it before it goes on the jeep , my guess as it is right now ,40-45 lbs .....pretty light to pick up . The tube is 1 1/4 - 1/8 wall . Recycled heating pipe that i scored from a reno got some 1 1/2 also that i donated to a buddy for tube fender's and some 2 1/2" x 1/4" wall . How to mount it not 100% sure yet ,looked at a couple different ways and not decided yet .....kind of go with the flow and open to ideas . Wish i had the xj here for a couple hours . I have been looking at lots of pics to get some ideas . Nick doesn't care what i make ,we made a deal lol he bought me a roll of wire and a case of beer and i said i would make him something for his spare tire . heheh Let the ideas fly ... pipe was free and i still have wire and beer

Nice little project... we need to make something similar for the CJ... to mount between the rear roll bar. With the gas tank in the back there is no space.

get it as low as possible. On a rig that age...I'd drill thru the roof into a crossmember and bolt it on almost flat. seal the holes with rtv or something.

Don't put much faith in factory crossmembers on XJ roofrack. They are not made of much. You should look at Alex's from up my way allen.White 98XJ.He got his fastened to factory rails that run along side the drip rail. You get my drift?
