we finally went and picked up dad's new project this morning. probably weighs a little more than the truck is rated to tow, but we took our time, and got home safely. we still have to find out what year it is, and what model, I don't know a lot about the j-trucks. the original engine is gone, has a big-block buick 350 in it, with an auto tranny, and a full-time 4wd t-case. I'm pretty certain they are dana 44's front and rear, and they are 6-lug, so I'd assume it's a 3/4 ton? I really don't know. guru's please speak up, we are waiting on the papers, the PO hasn't located them yet in his files. not entirely sure what we will do with this one, but we'll figure that out when we have a closer look at it. for the price we paid, it was worth it no matter what.

Early to mid 70's 1/2 ton. 3/4 and one tons had 8 bolt axles. The Buick 350 was used in earlier years. Should be a quadratrac transfer case, TH400 trans and the rear axle should be offset to one side. The TH400's had factory adapters to adapt to the Dauntless V6 and V8.
Is there a vacuum switch in the glove box?

found a VIN code thing that told me everything I wanted to know.
this is a 1975 J10 with a 119" wheelbase. it has a gvw of 6,200 lb's, came originally with a 360 2bbl.
now that's handy. cool stuff to find on the wonderful interweb

we haven't looked too closely underneath yet, but it doesn't appear to have any serious rust on the frame. the engine turns freely, we just need to charge up a battery to put in to try to start it. the tranny has lots of fluid in it still too, even though it apparently had a hole in the pan. the body is definately rough, but most of the rust is on the fenders, which I would assume are interchangeable between the j-trucks and the wagoneers of the era? the box doesn't have a lot of metal left, but we could probably salvage it if we tried hard. we will have more details when it is drier out.
