Howdy all, I was thinking of doing a jeep mod this summer, something a bit different. Was debating cutting off the roof and removing the windows from the back (behind the passenger seats). I'd place a back hatch (or something) and weld it in right behind the rear seats to enclose the cab, and for the back get someone to fab a roll cage (or find one 2nd hand and goose it in there) and weld it around the area in the back to reinforce it. Rip out the old carpeting and replace it with something more sturdy (have a few ideas) Here's a ghetto pic of what I was thinking. Its really bad (MS Paint lol) The black lines are a roll cage (not necessarily a roll cage, but you get the idea). How much do you think a job like this would set me back? The welding, fab (or 2nd hand roll cage modified to fit) and so on? Just an idea for now. I have a few good friends into metal fab who I might be able to talk into helping out.

To hire someone to do that will cost you a small fortune, check out my boatside thread, nsjc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fab&action=display&thread=30767&page=1 and this little body modification took 40+ hours to make it look like it should... paying someone to do 40 hours work at say $25. (you won't find too many fabricators that would do it that cheap) would be in the $1000. range and that won't help make the vehicle any more capable, just looks...and no offense but a 95 ZJ prolly won't be on the road 10 years from now if even 5... As for Darren's, it was the previous owner who built the notchback... If you Google Chop top ZJ or chopped ZJ you will find tons of info and threads from others that have done the same thing... Cheers!! Jeff

Yup someone else done the chop job on the notch back and I like the looks of it but would never chop another one. Very limited on what you can store and after a full size spare and tools you have no room for FOOD and DRINK . Also it weakens the structure as well, It flex's so much that I keep dropping the tailgate on trails due to flex. I am now in the process of making a soft top for it so I can open it up and make the back more usable, hence the Comanche tailgate install, faze 1 completed. You be better off spending the money on lift, lockers, bigger tires and making your rig more capable. Thats just my opinion. It is really up to you, but like Jeff said To pay someone to do it it would be pricey and to get someone to make a roll cage it would be $500.00 to do just the cage on top of the chop job. That was the price giving to me on doing a cage similar to what you want. Darren

A mod like that is really something that you would tackle yourself. Its not the best use of money to pay someone to do it, plus it would be a huge learning expeience if you did the work. I learned the hard way to do bodywork when my bro bobbed his yota pickup bed 18"... it ain't easy to get things to look right ;#
