Feel free to move this thread if necessary. I personally feel this weld isn't quite up to snuff for a roll cage - but I'd like other opinions

For clarification, this is a friend building a cage for his car. I'm not asking to be a dick, I'm asking because I don't feel it is a great weld and he plans to have this thing certified.... I don't want to see him weld it in the car and have it fail... I'm trying to help the guy but I'm not a professional welder.

Weld beads look good, need to blend where you start and stop better.

just curious... what's involved in the certification? who does it, what do they look for?

Bill I honestly haven't a clue - I've asked him to get it looked at before hand but he seems to think it is ok. I am by NO MEANS badmouthing him, and he may be right! but I REALLY REALLY don't want to see him come this far only to have to do it over.

Your friend is lucky that you care so much.
To me it seem's to need a bit more rod in there, the low's seem too hollow.
Im no welder, Scotty or Jan or someone can make a far beter judgement on this.

I'm not a welder either.
What is the material, and what is he welding with?
Looks like plain ol MIG.
I've got welds all over the cage in my CJ that look like that. It's not the best, but its not, like, really really bad or anything. It could be better.
If that is in an easy spot to get too, he'd better practise some more for the upside-down, around a corner stuff.

That was an easy place to get to (when the most of the cage was out of the car - this is what concerns me. I am dropping off my 220 stick welder and a bunch of rods for him to find when he gets home... I just hope he'll play with it some...

There is more skill involved in stick welding. If somebody dropped off a stick to me, i'd make a giant fawking mess for a week before getting acceptable welds.. Stick welding a cage would be a pain in the ass.
how big is the mig? It doesn't look like lack of amperage is problematic....(just from that one pic....)

It is a Princess Auto 110volt jobby. I don't intend for him to learn over-night - and I am giving him a bunch of metal to play with as well (I know he has his own scraps)
He picks up on this kind of stuff crazy well. I'd like him to play with it and he can make his own call, but I'd like to give him all options.

a cage isn't an ideal way to learn to weld, since you are relying on it to keep you from injury. Not sure what you'd practice on, on a little car, but in the 4x4 world there is always bumpers to make.
Looks like there is nice bends and nice copes.....it would be a shame to ruin it.
Get a look at some of the other 'cages' on local race cars, some are quite nice and you can tell it was expertly welded, and some are just brutal. They are racing, so it can't be that hard to pass the test, whatever that entails.

Hey im not a pro welder or anything by all means, but I am a first year welder, the penetration looks really good, has a nice ripple in it, but just like someone else already said, its the tie ins, and start stops, he just needs to pause longer on the starts/stops

Yupp id say slow down a little bit or turn up the wire a touch and work on the starts and stops. Other wise looks good.

yeah, it doesn't look too bad... heck i've made worse welds myself lol
i'd say slow down a little with the settings he has.. looks to be weaving a little bit too fast
maybe a little more overlap on his starts/stops
