Just bench building here... stupid boring rainy day's leave me too much time with my imagination. What would be involved in using a front wheel drive car's drivetrain to make a rear engine rail style buggy? I know it's been done, but can't find much on the web. Anybody have links?

Not a lot, there are production ones out there already. I belive the Rhyno uses a 1.8L Honda motor and transaxle going out to the diffs.
Alan and I talked about it before, thinking a 2.0L Chrysler would be cheap to find and use.
Edit: Didn't see you were talking a rear engine, I was thinking mid engine with 4wd

What I had planned on doing was taking a FWD car and spinning the plant sideways. Using the Zuk axles I have (which are off-set) and using the axle shafts as drive shafts and going direct to the diffs.
But that was just a plan..... ;D

Yup, my old "tractor" was built like that... as well as most comp rock crawling buggies. Pretty neat, as the axle reduction is like a secondary... super low.
But yeah, I was thinking 2wd rear engine buggy. That way the entire drivetrain and rear suspension is all in one... just got to build steering and front suspension... and a bunch of tube in between. ;D

Don't know why I put this in Jeep tech. LOL Probably more off topic.

Don't forget the few hundered pounds of weight you're going to need in the front to keep the wheels on the ground

upside down diffs - I think the Honda's spin in the opposite direction to most other motors or something. Glen - I moved this here from gen. b4 you mentioned sand rails. i think we all assumed 4x4 and a transverse mid engine. but whatever...carry on.

Yeah, its irreverent since he's building a dune buggy..although I can't for the life of me figure why with no dunes you can legally drive in here...oh wait, that's irreverent too. LOL

Well...
My intention was to build a nice crusher dust trail around my property. It would be for walking, biking and I'd build a go kart or two for the family. When my dump trailer done, this is going to be it's main purpose. I started clearing the trail this passed weekend... and realized that it would take ALOT of fill/ gravel/ crusher dust to get it to what I want. The idea's not dead, but I'm leaning towards a rougher trail, and a beefier buggy. LOL.
All ideas for now. The trailer will be used one way or the other, so it's not a waste.
It's gonna be fun taking the Jeep around for the first time. I might make an event out of it. ;D

My brother and I built a 2WD buggy like that using a cavalier engine. The transmission and axles are actually behind the engine, so when it is put in the back, it actually becomes a mid-engined buggy. We used the subframe, control arms, and struts, everything, .. worked great.
If you want 4WD, then use two engine/trans combos (one in the front and one in the back), use automatics, tie the two shifters together, and away you go. 8 cyl power. Car and Drive magazine did this to a Honda CR-X back in the eightys, accelerated faster than a corvette at the time.
