Have a bit of steel / aluminum scrap around the shop that is more or less just taking up space (engine block, crank, old brake discs and calipers). Worth hauling this over to Burnside to Burnside Recyling for scrap? What are the prices these days?
As far as aluminum, I have some intake manifolds/etc that have bits of steel (tubing connections, etc) pressed into them. Worth trying to strip that stuff to get more for them (as 'pure' aluminum vs mixed?). If so.. suggestions as to how?
PS: Any suggestions for scrap dealer on the south side of Halifax (Timberlea/Tantallon/etc)?

I junked a camper trailer over the summer, took 15 minutes here and there to strip the aluminum off it and clean it up. All in all I got about $80 for the clean aluminum - figure it took me about 3 hours above what I had to do to get the frame of the camper trailer out from under the rotted plywood etc.

Call and ask, its a commodity, the price changes with demand. Demand is high, prices are up. especially aluminum and copper. You will make your money back on bringing clean/seperated product. I go to SNF, there is another place beside them too. Dartmouth Metals is just one place you can bring your stuff. (Really easy to get a flat with their terrible scale/unloading setup) Back into the junk pile and unload...sucks! SNF has a fairly clean yard and clean scales. But I've gotten a flat there before too. They are all big meanies. Don't expect a smile and you'll be made to feel like a moron when you don't 'natually' take to their 'common sense' ways of doing things. Don't unload anything until you get a yard toad to tell you where to do it. Have fun. Tell us where you went and how much you got. I guess $100.

Thanks for the heads up. I got some prices, basically 7c / lb for steel and 45c/lb for clean/used aluminum, and only 10c/lb for mixed iron/alum. I don't have near enough stuff to get $100 worth. I probably only have 200-300 lb of steel and a bit of aluminum. Still, might as well get paid for it instead of dropping it off at the dump and paying for the privilege.

recycling in dartmouth.... Steel- SNF is the cleanest of the two places in Burnside for peddling scrap steel but the yard, like Creepy said, is a place to get flats. Plus, you have to give ID and your first born if you've never dealt with the staff in the "evil tower" before. You won't get much for steel... I filled the trunk of a small car with differential gears from large trucks, nearly killed the car, got $18.
Aluminum- Harbour Metal Recycling Ltd, 29 Pettipas Dr. has consistently given me the best prices on clean aluminum. Prices for dirty aluminum, are the same everywhere, IF they'll even take it. I had the manager come out and negotiate a price for clean aluminum the first time I went so it's worth going to the place instead of calling. It's worth cleaning up your scrap. The difference is 50cents/lb or more.
Brass and copper- If you are just dropping off a box full of junk brass fittings etc, go to Burnside Recycling (Simmonds Dr) instead of the other recycling depot around the city. All those places sell to Burnside Recycling so you are getting less if you go to your neighborhood recycling depot in the city with brass/copper.
Hope this helps...

If you have a trailer on it is to hard to get around at Dartmouth Metals. The only place i take my steel to is SNF. All the good stuff i take to Harbour Metals.
