Not a tow rig, but it is a truck (and if it had a hitch it would pull anything I'd ever need to pull!). I removed everything off the rear frame of the ol' Ranger to "restore" it after 21 years of use. I drained the rear end oil so I could remove the axles and backing plates. The rear end gears have 435,000 km on them, the oil around 225,000 since the last change (this will only be the second time I've changed the oil!). Everything is as clean as the day they were installed...this is how it looked when I removed the cover; nothing has been cleaned. This old 8.8 hasn't started to wear yet! That's the oil I drained out of it on my index finger...about 225,000 km on it! Here are the rear brake shoes at about 200,000 km...big difference when you're not running 'em in mud! ;D There's the rest of the project...that hole between where the shock mount rivets were is what started this. Gotta get Alan to give me a hand fixing that. And there's the rest of the parts. The springs are single fiberglass leaf that I pirated off a 4 cylinder Ranger a year or so after I bought mine (the regular heavy-duty leaf springs made it look like someone kicked it in the ass)...they've held up better than I ever thought they would. Uploaded with ImageShack.usMy plan is to get everything painted and detailed. Nice weather is just around the corner and I'm getting itchy to drive it (one, because I enjoy driving it...two, because on average it gets about 10 MPG more than the TJ!)

I'm not familiar with the 8.8, what is the big gear on the back of the ring gear?

ABS tone ring. The rear ABS sensor (this truck only came with rear ABS) is mounted in the top of the housing.
