So.. I'm thinking on adding another inch to my lift and going up a tire side to a 235/85R16. Because frankly. Wide tires SUCK in any slippery conditions. I can get a set of 16" steel ranger rims for free, and for a brand new set of cooper discover STT's in that size are $1300 with taxes. I'm also going on a road trip to halifax tuesday to pick up my new front bumper off of a member here. Might end up staying for a few days, to get away from all this cape breton crazyness lol.

Well, i got my bumper now, and some supplys for my winch. Just need a switch, some cables, and to re-paint the bumper. But first things first i need to fix my heater. I've replaced the switch, the resistor, and took the blower motor out of my Tan jeep and still doesent work.. I think I'm just gunna rig it up for now so i can have heat.

And to creepy, I sure will! hopefully I'll have er mounted tomorrow if i can find a warm garage to put it on in. I also fixed my heater somewhat. the blower motor was shot and a bunch of wires were melted, So what we did for now was just replace the blower motor with the one from my parts jeep, and just ran a wire to a toggle switch inside then to a fuse, then to a switched on open fuse block. Its super hill-billy, and ugly. but it works for now.

Well i finally got both my broken windows, and had to provide both of them.. dr.glass 1st couldent order the back window, so i got the one from my parts jeep, and they were supposed to order the door quater window.. but they went and ordered the window that opens, so i had to go and pull the window out of my parts jeep again, ugh. but on a good note my half doors will be getting started soon and the new bumper should be going on tomorrow.

Well, I got my new flowmaster 40 put on today, its nice now that i can actually hear myself think then we went to my buddy Stevens house to put on my bumper, everything for the most part was going hunky dory. none of the bolts broke, bumper came off with ease, steering box came off ok. Then when we went to put it all back together..the bumper went back on ok, but the steering box, first off the spacer was destroyed, so we made one from steel and 3 old bolts welded together. then we tryed threading the bolts in with the washers, wouldent go in. so steve says "Oh just take them off, the bumper should be enough" so me trusting steven since he has more experience around rigs than me i let him do that. so we get the farthest back and middle bolt in, and snugged up. then it comes to the front bolt, we try threading it in and got nothing. so we pryed on the steering box a little to see if we could get the hole to line up it started to thread then got really stiff, so steve just goes and throws the impact on it and strips the bolt. So he says "Oh well just keep the 2 in for now and you can get a bolt tomorrow" so we tightened everything up and off i went home. everything was fine and perfect until I got to my driveway, i cut sharp right to pull in and the steering box just came completely loose and i lost most of my steerability, i managed to get it in the driveway, but if you grab onto the steering box it just wobbles all around. So.. if the threads in the actual box arent stripped, should a new and or used factory spacer, and 3 brand new bolts and washers fix this?... I had a jeep buddy tell me that on XJs once the frame where the steering box bolts to gets damaged, your better off just scraping the whole jeep.. D: please dont tell me i have to do that. Oh and some random pics from today broken spacer I'll get pics of the actual bumper installed tomorrow.

Did the spacer bits fall out? You need a good spacer in there. The 'rig is ruined' when the sleeves around the steerbox holes going thru the frame start to crack away from the unibody and fall inside the chassis. You'll see cracks everywhere, and the sleeves can move around. Maybe you cracked the mount ears off the steering box by running with 2 bolts and a fawked up spacer/impact gun.
I've sold about a dozen of these bumpers and I'm pretty confident the steerbox bolt holes are perfect. No one else has alignment issues, and its cut on a CNC machine, same every time. Feel free to make one or two of the holes a bit bigger if it won't assemble. The stock bolts are just long enough. This mounting system eliminates steerbox flex, and the chassis will be saved, once you get it on there.
I'm guessing from the inability to get the box lined up, and the bolts were short, that the spacer was messed up to begin with.
Bummer.

Is there an alternative method to eliminate steering box flex so that area can be reinforced ?

The sleeves try to pull thru the chassis. My bumper mounting eliminates it by spreading load to a bunch of other bolts, and a huge plate.
You can also brace like in the Inchbomb build, by attaching box to opposite side of frame.
The thing is, the little crappy aluminum spacer sets the exact location of the steerbox location side-to-side, and if its busted, the box can flail around and break the mount ears off and strip the bolt holes. It is a well-known shitty part. Neither type of bracing can fix a bad spacer.

Is there a better spacer that can be used to replace the shitty one ? Or is it a factory flaw that you have to hope does'nt fail ? I think my xj needs to have some type of reinforcement here being a 95 and this area is okay now. Sorry for using this thread for my questions. If you move it I get it.
