Breakaway brakes are required on all trailers with a registered weight of over 1,350 kg (2,977 Ibs).Non gov't source: All trailers and semitrailers with a gross weight of load and vehicle of more than 4,000 lbs. must have properly functioning brakes controlled by the operator of the motor vehicle.Gov't info for farmers: You must use a breakaway switch when towing a trailer that weighs MORE than 1 360 kg (3,000 lbs). Source – Motor Vehicle Act, Trailer Coupling and Other Safety Devices Regulations (1)(f) and (6) Motor Vehicle Act nslegislature.ca/legc/statutes/motor%20vehicle.pdfcan't find anything in there. be back later. lol
