I've been looking around at different mufflers for my project, and noticed that the stock XJ muffler has a 2.25" inlet and a 2" outlet. I've been stuck on the train of thought that I want a 2.25" inlet and the same or larger outlet so the exhaust flows smooth.
I'm curious, what is the reason for this? I've done a bit of searching and have my own ideas, but I'd like to hear what others say.

It keeps back presure on the engine . Some say it = more power , others say more flow the better

Anyone have experience running a 2.5 inlet / 2.5 out as opposed to stock 2.25in/2.0" out?

Yeah I know about reversible mufflers, came across a few. I'm debating straying from the stock Inlet 2.25" / Outlet 2" to a larger size. I've seen some people say that the newer mufflers at the stock size flow better, and others saying that 2.5" inlet/outlet is the best.

I'm going to get the 2.5"in/2.5" out, run with it. If I want it to be 2.25" out I can get the exhaust tail pipe modified by the muffler to 2.25"

I've read that the stock muffler on the XJ was restrictive, and aftermarket of the same size have better flow (I guess the tubes inside were too close to the ends).
2.5/2.5 should work fine I think.
