When I bought my car hauler it came with a winch of unknown make and condition. I didn't have the time to tear into it at the time and thought it was a 8000 lb Warn. The way it was mounted made it difficult to see the whole thing or the label on it. I used it for the past 4 months and the brake has let go on it finally. It also seems to be lacking power now. I NEED a winch on my trailer so I went out and bought one at Princess Auto the other night. They had the Keeper 13,500 model on sale and the reviews I found seemed ok. SO I pull the old winch off the trailer yesterday and discover it is a older Warn M12000!! I'm quite happy with this surprise! My question is should I look into rebuilding it or my next question is does anyone know of someone around the Amherst area that can rebuild it for me? From what I am finding these winches still fetch a decent dollar so I suspect it's well worth rebuilding. thanks

Yep, a very good unit. A lot of times its simply bad electrical connections making it work poorly. Especially the motor ground.
The gear side you can rebuild yourself, its basically a dis-assembly/cleaning/lube job. The motor side can be tested at an electric motor shop and rebuilt there if needed.

I figured it was worth rebuilding. I will start tearing into it and see what it needs. The brake is shot for sure and I heard that's the most expensive part. But even if it costs me $500 to rebuild that still seems reasonable for what it is.
