Let me start by saying this WJ has had this problem since I first bought it 3 months ago. I have no idea how long it did it before I purchased it...
To go out when the truck sits for longer than 20 mins and it will have to crank for extended period of time before it will start. Runs rough for maybe 2 seconds then acts perfectly normal from then on out. Idles perfect and tons of pickup when at full throttle, no hesitation at all.
I turn the truck off and go back out within 15-20 mins and it fires right up without any issues. maybe turns over a half a turn. Wait longer that 20 mins then when I go it will have an extended cranking time for 6-8 seconds before it will fire.
I can turn the key to on (without starting) to let the fuel pump prime the fuel rail, I have fuel at the Schrader valve as soon as it primes once but still not starting. I have tried it multiple times before I start the truck but after the extended cranking time I get a gas smell from the exhaust and it acts/smells like it is flooded.
Also tried disconnecting the coolant sensor to make sure it wasn't thinking it was already warmed up and not giving it enough fuel for a cold start but it didn't help.
Someone thought a leaky injector but how to tell? Can just the O-Rings be replaced or does the whole injector need to be replaced? Where to get new injectors? Is there an upgrade that I should look into if they all need to be replaced?
Thx Aaron

Looks like it has an appointment tomorrow to get hooked up to a scanner. I need to have this resolved, it drives me crazy!
I will keep everyone posted with the results.

Well the technician that looked at it today had a fuel pressure gauge on it and it is not supposed to bled down more than 10psi in 10 minutes but mine lost over 20psi in under 10 minutes. Bad check valve in the fuel pump assembly is what I was told.
Turn the key gets fuel to the rail but not enough to prime itself and start the engine.
Better be right cause I just ordered a new assembly and will install it tomorrow.

purchased a new fuel pump assembly today thru NAPA and replaced the unit this morning. So far all day long it has started without cranking over even twice. Man I hope this is fixed!
oh yeah it was an Airtex assembly and cost $214.00 tax included.

Words can't explain how pissed I am at the moment!!! Went out to start the jeep and it took 20 cranks before it would fire up. Back to doing the same thing as before. Worked good all day yesterday. What a f$%&ing waste of money.

It could be the replacement pump. A lot of the non OEM pumps are garbage.

What year is your WJ? V-8 or IL6? If IL6 I highly recommend ruling out the short little ignition lead from Coil to distributor and that yer grounds are good. Can't remember the value but think it needs 5-8K Ohms? I spent some time on a very much the same issue, then one day (just before work)she would not start at all! Had fuel at the rail so moved on to Sensors....no joy, all seemed good. Changed out everything (ignition syst)else including the coil, but neglected that little stupid cable! Had to relearn that lesson again....always check easy stuff first!

The WJ is a 2003 with the 4.7L H.O. I am going to get the fuel pressure checked again this week. I will keep you posted. Hopefully not the aftermarket pump but you never know. I also see that now if it open the throttle body a bit while cranking it does start quicker??? Maybe lets more air in to mix with the fuel???
I don't know but it does cut down on cranking time if I do this.

Just have to unbolt it off the throttle body, clean it up good, and bolt it back on. Brake cleaner should work good if it is carboned up. Or, it could be failing. If I remember correctly, do not turn the key on with it unbolted from the TB if it is still plugged in. I think the IAC will cycle back and forth when the key is turned on and if it is unbolted and and does not have a seat to push against, it could over-travel and bottom out. The Intake passages leading to the IAC in the TB could be plugged up as well, should take a look at those, and maybe clean them out. Maybe a good throttle body cleaning too. Try that. Hope it helps.
