i wouldn't say just a smidge bigger than a cj. the length difference between an unlimited tj and a 4 door jk is only 4 inches. not something to fret over i don't imagine.

Ok ... I'm listening. You're gonna convince me that spending $12k on this TJ stocker is a better bet than a semi-totaled jk? Why? That's a LOT of $$$$ Have you looked into what you will need to do to get a written off JK legal for the road again? IIRC a rebuilt title requires inspection by a certified engineer - something that has been discussed a lot, but I'm not sure what the current status of the availability of an engineer is, if its still the guy in NB, you better build it stock, get it legal and then start you mods. Or is it for off-road only? Genuinely concerned now. I thought all you needed was a VIN and an Ok from a certified mechanic??? This assuming it is not branded as "non-repairable" which generally means it is a metal meatball. www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/paal/rmv/paal271.aspAm I wrong?

with a rebuilt title, you do not have to take it to an engineer to have it inspected. My Grand Cherokee had a Salvage title on it when I bought it, all I had to do was have it looked over my the machanic when he inspected it for me. he had to sign a form saying that it was mechanically fit, and in good condition. then I had to take that to the DMV and show it to them before they would give me plates. it doesn't cost anything extra, and doesn't take much extra time either.
I have to agree with the idea of going with an Unlimited rather than a JK. much cheaper, you won't have to worry about straightening the frame with a rebuilt rig, or replacing the budy. it is already there and in good shape, and ready to modify. get the Unlimited, throw in your 1-ton axles, change the engine, or don't, throw in a long arm upgrade and a 4-6" lift, maybe some highline fenders, and you're almost there.

I'd love to have a look at it to get a sense of how much space you have behind the front seats. I've got a nice stocker LJ here on 31's as well. Kev's is on 1tons and leafs, mine is near stock. The usual girlfriend, dog, and Xmas gifts all fit with tidy packing for a drive to Cape Breton or driving vacations. Way more room than the TJ. Mind you my dog weights 12lbs, but still. heh. There is a footwell for the rear passengers, and about 2' behind the rear seat. Its quite a bit longer, and rides a hell of a lot better. I'd say its a better platform than the JK to build. Unlimited aftermarket support, Holy Grail 4.0. No wacky electronics. You don't want that JK motor after 200000kms and 35's I'll grab some pics for ya later if I get a chance. I love braggnig up the LJ.

The Unlimited Rubi is the way to go. A lot of machine for the money. I have had mine since new and the only thing I want to do is long arm it and re-gear. It is very roomy inside. I drive mine everyday. It has a 6inch Rough Contry lift, 1inch body lift and 35" rubber.

to put the unlimited a bit more into perspective size wise. A regular tj is larger then your cj5 was. My buddy bought a tuffy storage box for his unlimited, and it fit behind the back seat perfectly. When he sold it to another friend with a tj, the seat had to be removed, and it took up pratically the whole space behind the front seats, so its almost like a full passenger seating area extra.

yeah as far as space goes four adults can fit alot more comfortably than in a tj you dont have to stuff the front seats between your legs if your sitting in the back. behind the back seat i have a minuture green lee box behind the back seats and there is still room. the added length gives them a much better ride as well, as both of your options would.
