i think you ahould drop in a 5.9 cummins old 12 valve, be a decent powerplant! transmissions are impossible to find and really expensive to rebuild. Its gonna be gas for now. I have the trans.

I think you should just plan for a drivetrain based on the "Ultimate design criteria" - Whatever you can find laying around or find cheap enough you're willing to pay money for. It's pretty much how I live my entire life....

A trans or an engine? Can't hurt I guess.

Shit, yeah. Check it out for me. thx. I got the dually home, this is how it came into the yard. Had GPS Towing drag it home, they have a Topkick, and can handle pretty much any job. Call Colby at 880-1559 and tell him I refered you. Yarr! JeepCrane is angry! Scalpin' that Chevy! I see the truckers going up into the pit, they ALWAYS look over to see what the hell I'm up to, had a few shaking their heads yesterday. haha.

i have mis-ID'd the rear axle. Its not a 14bolt, no bolts around the pinion/yoke area.
kinda looks like a big fat 60. maybe 70 or 80? i'll figure it out later. there's a pic there is someone wants to finger it out.

yup, the V8 diesels too. They are dogs, aren't they? Actually they are Dogs That Don't Hunt!! Keep clear of both 6.2 and 6.5 Diesels. Free advice from a Chev Guy to a former Mopar Man Some of the best boat anchor's around , you might as well use a 4l jeep in it as to use a 6.5. diesel

If you clean the lower cast webs off on each side of the diff cover, there is a good chance there is a number cast there, like 70 or 80. My vote is for a Dana 70 dually, but there is also a D70 HD, which had 4 inch axle tubes, iirc, according to MLC.

Tubes are huge. That could be it. I'll check the casting

I bought a mid-80's 1ton Chev 2wd quadcab longbox chassis, with an SM420/435? 4-speed,? Sm420 were stopped being used in around 68...then they used a SM 465...till the 90's then NVG4500 was used in the heavier 3/4 ,1 tons cool project

I finally got around to going through this whole post. Jan, that truck is just awesomeness on wheels, man! I've always loved old haulers, especially cabovers. I remember when I had just started driving and traveling as many back roads as I could find. In behind Salmon River (in Clare), not far from where the Lake Doucette Racetrack is now, there was a '54 Ford Cabover (or as Ford called them, "Cab Forward" - a 600 if I remember right) with a stake body sitting next to an old, abandoned house. I used to dream of that truck and what it could be. I don't know what ever became of it, but I still think about it now and then...you just don't see these old workhorses around anymore. Anyways, I'm glad you rescued this one and I'll eagerly be watching the build. You likely won't go quite this far with it (although I'm sure it'll be ultra-cool when you're done), but here are a couple of pics for inspiration. Alan will likely remember seeing some of these in Debert a number of years ago. I realize the last 2 aren't cabovers, but they're neat and may provide some inspiration for you. I apologize for the picture quality, these were taken long before the advent of digital photography... '54 Ford "Cab Forward" '48 or '49 Ford '38 Ford "Barrel-Nose" Uploaded with ImageShack.us
