I believe 0.006" on backlash.Had a budy who has done many gears installs. We had carrier out many times and used old bearings for set up bearings.Pattern looks good.I'm keeping my fingers cross.XJ has been in garage since last fall and getting real itchy to get out and wheel.Looking to do a trail next saturday?

Put new 4.56 ring and pinion in the XJ yesterday and a locker.Would like to know what some have done as far as breaking in the gears. This is what I found for advise! Insure axle is filled with high quality hypoid gear lubricant, minimum GL5 rating, and any required additive. Drive the vehicle under light load for 20 miles. Stop and let the differential cool completely, at least 30-60 minutes. Drive 500 easy miles at varying speeds and light loads. Change gear oil and any additive. Any opinons would be great! The back axle gears were already in the axle I bought so no break-in needed...

No it can be from a TJ XJ MJ ZJ YJ . Cool,I still have my 88MJ,its has 4cyl and 4:10 gears so can rob from there. What would a 5 speed XJ have for gears.Have a freind also with lots of parts but has standard XJ parts....

You need a new carrier for 3.73 and up 4.10 etc the 3.55 carrier will not work with the 4.56 find one from any YJ XJ ZJ . All d 30 carriers are interchangable . but it must be from 3.73 - 4.10 Would it have to be from a HP D30?

My XJ has 3:55 gears in my D30,its and auto and yes I have checked! I already swapped in a 8.25 with 4.56 gears in rear and have bought new 4.56 gears and rebuilt kit for the front. From what I ve been reading the new gears won't fit in the present carrier only if it has a ratio of 3:73 or lower? Can anyone comment on this,I'm getting ready to install and would like to know ahead of time... Thanks for any info on this...

Them tires have a good review. I will be watching this build as well.I remember the Libby in the Altimate Adventure a few years back with solid axle swap! Was that the Yellow one with the Scoggins-Dickey ZZ383? No,red one like yours built by Trailready for the 2003 Ultimate Adventure.I looked hard to find footage of it,I know I've seen better but here are a few shots of it wheeling!
