That's cool Jan, I was just wondering. Pipe is never used in drag racing for cages, it's not allowed..... so I was curious. Good job on building the bender though.

no prob, it brings some debate. the big boards like pirate4x4 it has been beat to death by pro's. I made an educated choice, it wasn't to simply save money - it was to make best use of available resources.
you may find yourself looking for more info once you price tube tho. $7-10/foot in an exo gets insanely expensive.
suspension links are a different story.

Jan, I got quoted $5.15/foot from Metals-R-Us. After getting the quote, I got to thinking that I would use the tube for the part of the cage that's over my head for more protection in case I roll it, and use pipe for the body panel protection parts of the cage. I had planned on using pipe for my bumpers anyway, I actually have the same pipe die that you're using on order.

That's a pretty good price for tube! The tube vs pipe pissing match that pirate and places like that get into is silly. Pipe and tube are measuring conventions, other than that you need to look at the specific grade of tube/pipe. Would you trust 'tube' used for making handrails over 'pipe' used to carry steam in a nuclear reactor just because the 'tube' is measured by OD? I don't think so. That being said, even regular black pipe is probably plenty strong for what we're doing, its just heavy and sucks to bend. Better grades of pipe bend nicer but are still heavy. You're better off to pick one or the other and stick with it, save you having to buy additional dies. No sense in spending $300 to buy a pipe die to save $2 a foot just for bumpers.

Burkee, we need the pipe die for other stuff too so it's no big deal to order both. Otherwise I'd agree with ya, it'd be silly to buy both and only use them once.

its cheap for a reason, however if your not worry about ding that would be on your pipe and you can always get a muffler bender to.

yeah man, that's why i built one. PA or exaust benders reduce the cross-section and dimple the pipe. mine is smooth, smooth, smooth.
