makin my own tube bender! had a JD^2 die from when i had access to a bender. been a few years without one......can't make the really cool stuff without one. i hate the PA pipe crusher, i'm too much of a stickler on the quality of the bends. i want to use pipe, not DOM or tube, so the bends should be smooth radius and full diameter to maintain strength. since pipe is not as strong as dom/tube, i think it is neccessary to try to have near perfect bends to offset the lesser material choice. the price of DOM/tube is out of reach for building hobby stuff. so 1.5" sch.40 pipe it is. that's the die i have, the pipe is 1.9" O.D., just about 2". good size for bumpers, roll cages, and rockrails. i will get a smaller die in the future for doing "trim work", where a smaller diameter would look better. prob around a 1.5" or 1.25" O.D. got the plans from www.gottrikes.com there is a huge build thread on www.pirate4x4.com as well. here: www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376183pics to follow, i never took any yet.

drillin holes bore to finish size material all cut, still working on the holes. oh yeah - an important detail i forgot - the bender is designed for a Pro-Tools die, i have a JD2. Ken came over and we figured out the differences. I'm not building this directly to the plans. that would be too easy.

We were talking about benders on the trail today, and I told them about this one. It's the one I plan to build someday. Great minds think alike.

it bends vertically so it's easier to tell if you are keeping it square than a horizontal bender like a jd2. one man operation.
also takes up less floorspace. a horizontal bender needs a bunch of room to swing the pipe around. a cage hoop may not allow you to have the rig in the shop too.
and the jd2 needs to be bolted to the floor, or clamped in a big secure vice.
this design can be on casters.

if its on casters wouldn't it roll around while your trying to bend? even with brake casters wouldn't the strain from trying to bend cause it to want to move around? lets see the pics

Maybe where he's bending vertically, this won't happen so much ??

it's hydraulic, no force outside the frame of the thing. it uses a long stroke hyd. ram out of a cherrypicker.
a major advantage over a protools or jd2.
non-lock casters and leveling feet are in progress.
one bummer is it looks like the die will have to be re-pinned b4 it gets to 90deg. minor annoyance, will not effect the bend quality. it's just nice to be able to do 90deg. in one shot.

it's done! testing bends later tonite... the frame the swingarm die and pins hydraulic ram from my cherrypicker assembly close up. the pipe is just sitting in there to see where it goes. it would be bent about 45deg. where the die is in this photo.

ok!! it bends ;D it's like a one armed rowing machine tho. a bazzillion pumps, need to find air/hydraulic cylinder sometime. had to repin once to get 90deg. hard to get the pipe out too. had to beat the pins. but it did the bending perfectly, smoothly. full cross-section, no dimples. stoked!!
