My first metal fab work. Going to make my own winch mount plate. I know it's not much for some of you but I'm excited. ;D Picked up some 3/16 prebent steel this morning at our local scrape yard for free. (Manager owns a Jeep and he's going to check us out) Feel free to give input because I don't know enough to know that I don't know what I'm doing. Will post pics as I go but first I need to restock the first aid kit. First step - clean it up.

Should the fairlead be mounted low because the cable comes off the bottom of the drum? The front will be cut down at 45 degree angles and may have support bracked welded on the back side. Burned out my $20 angle grinder so work stopped. PS I would post pics of the spectacular puppies but rules are rules.

yep, mount it low so the fairlead is at the bottom of the drum.

Some Jobmate tools are good, the mini grinders are not. I had to get one once when i needed one in a hurry. Replaces it a couple times until the warranty was gone. Pick up a Mastercraft one when they are on sale for $25, great working grinder.

Ya win some, ya lose some with the Chinese grinders. Kinda like Champion Winches. The CT one has been good to me, and is on sale a lot. Sometimes it comes in a kit with a bunch more discs for cheap. I've been using the cheap PA flapdiscs, they clean up surface rust nicely, and they had the Dewalt twisted wire wheels for grinders on sale too, they work great. Did your grinder come with new brushes? Paul

Thanks Wade but CT had the Dewalts angle grinders on sale today. The old $20 Job Mate lasted four years so I did OK. Next is to mark and drill the winch holes and the holes to mount it to the frame.
