WOW... just hung up the phone with my insurance guy. The quote he gave me for liability insurance to tow other people's rigs was for 6 months.
For a year it is $7500.
For reference... If anyone owns a trailer and tows something (Jeep etc) on it that is not theirs, and anything happens, there is NO insurance coverage as this is a quasi-commercial usage.
If you tow ANYTHING to which you do not have title and anything happens you are 100% liable for any and all injury and/or damages to person and property.
I called around to a couple of different companies and got the same story. Doing this REQUIRES commercial towing insurance if one is using one's personal rig and trailer to haul someone else's junk.
One can loan one's trailer to someone and then if there is an issue then it is the problem of the person towing the trailer if something untoward happens.
One can tow one's OWN junk and the insurance extends from the towrig to the trailer and on to what is being towed.
In short:
If it is yours. Tow it.
If there is paperwork showing that it is NOT yours... Tow at own risk
SO my trailer is now retired after today from the towing and rescuing business. I have enjoyed helping out all the people that I have helped in the past and appreciated all the things that they have done for me in return. Many thanks to everyone for services rendered. ;D
I would advise one and all to purchase a CAA Premier membership... You get 5 x 360km tows a year for a couple of hundred bucks.
If you ask me for the use of my trailer and/or tow rig the answer is no.
Just wanted to get this out there and there are a few of us who have stepped up to help out and who have been unwittingly putting our whole financial lives on the line by trying to help out our fellow Jeepers.
***EDIT for spelling before my spelling and grammar minions see the errors.***
