Wow... 150A in the garage? why so much? Bill I'm assuming Scott told NSPI or Tdogg what he wanted and they came up with the number. It's been a while since I bought any service entrance gear but 150A used to be more expensive than 200A because 200A was so popular. These days that might not be the case so a 150A might be marginally higher cost than 100A, which is really more than he needs, unless he's going with some type of electric heat or furnace. I have 60A off the house, I didn't want to pay the monthly service cost or have another pole. If the house service is old it might be best to change that and feed the garage underground from the house, little more money up front but less fees down the road, and no poles in the yard.

Just for reference sake - no idea on codes or whatnot -
The service in my shop is 100A on its own meter and I can run the plasma table/45A plasma/compressor/electric heat all at once, no issue.
TheonlyBull says earlier in the thread an entire machine shop on 60A from a house.
I think Scott will be installing a lift, above and beyond the normal welding plugs. Not too big a load, a welder is probably worse.
He never mentioned how he was going to heat.

the only time i'd see an issue there scott, is if your running the hoist, the welder cranked hard up, and the heat on....
we had 3 lathes, 3 welders, 3 drill presses, a hoist, about 24 lights, electric heat on in the office, a large bandsaw (30") a cut off, power hacksaw, shaper, 5hp air compressor, and many, many hand tools.
at one point, there was 3 of us there working full time, and never once did we blow a fuse, or pop a breaker.
the only time we had an issue, was is someone was welding, and the bandsaw was started, it would drop your heat on you....
i don't think you'd have an issue running your shop off a single 100 amp entrance.
the shop we're in now, is on a 100 amp service and costs about $40-50 / month for power, with 2 of us, working 40 hours a week, plus hobby use on the weekends
check on the cost of a 150 amp service, compaired to a 100 amp service. seems to me, our basic charge is about $15-20/ month
