How many people out there have inverters in their Jeeps? and what do you do with them? I remember meeting somebody at one of the past Jeep jams that had a big inverter that was big enough to run power tools off of. Must have been 3,000 watt. Last week I bought a used 1,750 watt model. It's powerful enough to run a coffee maker on the trails. This week at Cdn Tire there's a 1,500 watt model on sale for $99.99.

I had a 1700 watt in my jeep and used to run a electric inpact gun. Very handy with trail repairs.

i've got a 1500watt, 2000w peak that i use in my truck. it'll just start our skill saw, runs most other power tools just fine. really handy at times, sure beats lugging around a genset
i took a set of booster cables like yours, took off one set of clamps, and solidered on a set of lugs, and bolted them onto the inverter. makes it real easy to hook up now.

I picked up a 1,000 watt one a while back, the plan is to mount it to the side of the wheel well inside the cab of the YJ. I did the math, and I should be able to run a 7A angle grinder off of it. would come in handy when we do some steel roofing on the camp in the middle of the woods.

I've been running inverters for a few years now. It's great for running power tools on the trail.I've probably used it most for running a little electric chain saw , particularly after Juan and white Jaun.
Also find it extremely useful during power outages. The one I have now is the 1750 eliminator , it powers the fridge , freezer , computers , phones , lots of lights and really having the jeep idling in the driveway uses surprisingly little fuel.
Mine is under the rear seat in the zj, easy access and out of the way.

I was just gonna say that Ken used an inverter to almost light the rear seat of his ZJ on fire one year, but thats only a con on a long list of pros.

It is on the list of wants for the XJ.
One big enough to run my electric chainsaw, and my welder hopefully.
As stated, power tools on the trail would be a great assett, as well as many other uses.

was lookin at one of these today... would it be best to run dual batteries so it dont drain the life out of it?

When I ran my setup last week I had to "high idle" my engine while using the inverter and use two battery jumper cables.

it's best to have a deep cycle battery to run them off of. and even then, i prefer to have the motor running

One thing to keep in mind with these inverters, the cheap ones especially, is that they tend to make very dirty power. What this means is that the AC voltage is not a smooth sine wave, like what comes out of your house. Generally the output is quite choppy.
What does this mean? Usually nothing, you plug your device in, and it works. However, sensitive things like computers and such should be run off a DC adapter, not an inverter. Dirty power can hurt electronics. Coffee makers and tools would be fine though. Look for inverters boasting "Pure Sine" for clean output, if you need it. (But you likely don't)

I have an APC power filter I use with my generator, it doesn't have a battery backup but cleans the power.
