I'm thinking that's an extremely faded red.

Excellent idea for sure - but why did you go on the inside? It creates an edge for shit to get caught on when dumping. I understand that it allows you to keep the original body lines on the outside.
I guess it just comes down to aesthetics or functionality.... it is a pretty awesome looking little trailer.

I put it on the inside because it's going to be the surface that that tailgate "seals" against.
That being said; the tailgate's going to be 1/8" plate... should I put some kind of gasket between it and the frame, or will metal on metal be enough to keep gravel from spilling out?
edit; I suppose the same effect could have been accomplished with the frame on the outside. It would have also interfered with the handles and taillights.

If you are building a new tail-gate I'd have personally put it on the outside. You could beef it up and recess the tail-lights right inside the frame-work too Edit: How I did them on my trailer:

Being inside on the edges like that isn't going to stop much, and you could always put a piece of plate in there at an angle to make anything slide past.
No need for a seal on the gate, unless you want to carry liquids!

You could always seal it, bring it to jam, light a fire underneath and then we could all have a hot tub party.

picked up some supplies; plate for the tailgate, square tube for stake pockets & cheater boards, square tube for the top edge (not shown), and corner brackets for the cheater boards. trimmed started cutting off the tube from the top, as it's bowed in the centers and in order to get my stake pockets in a straight line... the sides of the trailer need to be as well. Not much support left. LOL Better start putting some metal back on.

I only had an hour to work at it the other night... cut the rest of the tubing off the top, and welded the bottom hinges on. Tubing is 1" with 1/8" wall, and hitch pins are 3/4"

So let's see... since last time I've capped the "frame" and welded it in place, welded in chain links for the tailgate chains, welded three sides of the square tubing that's replacing the round tubing rail, boxed those in at the tailgate... I think that's it. I think I'm going to use muffler clamp U bolts for the tailgate end of the chains... I'm making the chains easy to remove as they'll be used to limit the gate opening the opposite way for dumping gravel. Might trace the sides of the tailgate with 1"X1/8" flat bar to stiffen it up so it doesn't want to "fold" when laying level and weight is put on it.

Drilled though the gate to instal the U bolts... welded to the square tube. Welded the quare tube to the plate some more while I was there. Ta da! One minor drawback is that the chains have to be pulled in in order to close the gate Finished the square tube upper edge I suck at matching up miters... don't look too close LOL Patched up some holes and started to reinforce the gate. I used 1X1/4" angle just because that's what was in my stockpile. I would have rather 1/8" I'd like to do the same to the bottom, but it would keep the gate from dropping down all the way. I'll figgure something out. May weld some of that round tubing to the crossmember so the gate's edge would sit on it in the horizontal position, but slide over when folded down.
