So, because I'm a beginner welder... I thought I'd try a different route to get decent bends out of my new kinker. I had a length of 1 1/4" sch 40 laying around. unbent; I tried one 90deg bend as a baseline. This is how much it squished So I tried some shims and another bend better How much bend #2 bulged out Unfortunately, I'm out of scrap... but I'll scrounge around work and try doubling up the shims next time.

That's not too bad. First bend looks more like 60deg tho.
Got roller dimples on the flats after the bends? (which look terrible once mounted to a rig)

Yup, it's got some slight marks. I've got an idea for that.
The 1st was slightly under 90, and the 2nd slightly over.
I think I just cut the 1st a little short making it look less.

You know your gonna have to keep remaking shims ? They will squish , and will need to be replaced

I will make this easy for you. This is what I did to my bender and it worked. " period" Here is my version of the PA Kinker modifications. I used a piece of exhaust pipe welded to the rollers to prevent dimpling of the pipe. Welded both sided of the shoe for a tight fit for the pipe to prevent kinking and flattening of the pipe. The maximum bend so far was 60* so it worked fine. I hope this helps. Darren

Also to get any deg of a bend you have to go past that deg then release the pressure and check the bend and repeate till you get the desired deg's. Therefore permitately mark your dye and mark your pipeso it can be installed back into the same place.

Thanks Darren. I do know how... I just thought shims would be perfectly even, where weld may not be.... not to mention it's cast and I'm a rookie, so I didn't want to fawk up my new peice of gear.
I guess I'll give it a shot.
Oh, what size exhaust tubing was that? I was thinking I'd just give a very slight bend to a piece of 2" then do what you did... that way the edges don't dig in as it slides.

It was a 2.5". the cast needs to be hot to be able to stick, concentrate your weld on the cast first then into the pipe.

Propane torch will put some heat in it (a good one can get bolts red hot), but it's more in the way you weld it like Darren described.
