Some do , but I bet yours doesn't . Leave 1/8 - 1/4 gap between your tip and metal
What make is your plasma ? I think it was Bill R that got a chinese plasma , and the ground was not connected inside of the machine

so should it be touching the steel while cutting? from what i read thats what the drag sheild is for? If you are talking about the torch tip, no it doesn't need to touch, but will still work if it is touching. Just wears out the tips faster if touching (though cheaper plasmas seem to need the gap more than something like my Hypertherm). Drag shield lets you drag along the steel while it keeps the proper gag. My plasma recommends 1/16th gap.

so when i called to order the consumables i was looking at my parts page and it has 4 different tips/electrodes. some are longer than others and different sizes. what would the longer one do that the shorter ones dont? for differnet types of steel or something?

Sorry, didn't see this till now. A. That plasma may be broken out of the box. They are cheapy made with poor quality control. No offence. B. Water is really hard on consumables. The mention of the compressor never being drained is pretty high on the list of reasons the consumables lasted two jobs. C. Here is a link to a different brand, i'm assuming its the exact same machine with different stickers.....http://www.everlastwelders.ca/downloads/CutDmaster.pdf It has instructions for drag-cutting, and stand-off cutting. Stand-off, while harder, is easier on consumables. D. Must have good ground. grind off where you clamp it. E. clean off consumables with scotchbrite. Any nicks in the small hole in the tip, will cause a less dense plasma arc, and less cutting power = more slag/shitty cut. You can get away with a bit of hole damage, but nothing like in the pic, that is fubar. F. you destroyed the inner electrode by drilling it. There is a tiny peice of 'special metal' in the tip of the electrode to start the arc. As it wears, it erodes. Sounds like you saw the erosion, mistook it for a closed over hole, and drilled it out. Don't do that. G. Minimize the blowback to the torch tip. Read how to pierce, and lean back in the cut. so for your next round - drain the compressor, do anything you can to dry the air. If you are going to be moving this plasma unit around to friend's shops...mount a filter on it. You can get filters at welding shops that hold a filter that takes....toilet paper rolls (!), small and portable and cheap. They do a good enough job so that you won't destroy the consumables. For reference - I can get hundreds of feet of cutting on my CNC table with one set of consumables. Its all about the dry air.

thanks for the info jan every phone call i make about it i learn more. it has its own filter/regulator that came on it. should another one still be needed or is that one good enough? I Know its not the greatest brand or quality but i figured for $100 how could i go wrong? once i get all the kinks worked out im sure i can save that in grinding disks alone.

More filters and clean the machine filter after using the wet compressor, or your new tips will be toast quick.
The thing with the black on it looks like 'not a consumable'. the inside part is electrode, and the gored up little one is a sheild. Those are consumables. the black thing looks like a holder that got arc'd out bad on the side. maybe that's your drag adapter?
will that unit fire up just on the trigger? (pilot arc?) Or you have to make tip contact with the trigger on to fire?

yeah the black piece is the nozzle. it is a consumable part for that torch. It will fire by just pulling the trigger.

so after replacing all my consumables i tried again tonight and its doing the same $hitt. could it be possible the cold garage is effecting? it will make only slight burns in the steel and not cut. so i took the compresor, plasma all the cords in to the house to keep them warm incase the cold is causing the issue. i know electronics dont work well in cold temperatires and that is basicly all the plasma is right?

that's too bad my plasma loves the cold will the air does because there no humidity it's the hot days in the summer with high humidity that my consumables go but they last for about 6 months when I use it 4 times a week
come on over and use my plasma and bring yours over and use my dryer air
