Next on the list this week is the Viair 10007 OBA install. ;D This will require a good electrical install. I'm fresh off a huge electrical job, and will be around this weekend. you doing it over Scott's? ps: bolts are sized by the shank diameter, not the head. Think hole size, not wrench.

Excellent on bolt size. Thanks! Yes on Scott's. Open to all electrical help. We were having a look at where we'd mount it and it looks like we have a place situated. It's quite a unit.

Well the tank and compressor are ready to go. Well the tank/compressor mount is all squared away... I have seen a couple of these VIAIR units mounted on plywood and put in the back of the Jeep, but for me this is not good, as I also have the spare and the toolbags in the back and moving the plywood mount is unwieldy at best. So then we took from that the knowledge that another mounting place would be better. Bill Richards, many years ago did OBA on Wilma and mounted the unit on the wheelwell. Nice, clean install. So we looked at that. The LJ has lots of room but if the unit is mounted there, it precludes the use of the 1/2 top and tonneau cover in the summer and is a pain to get to in the winter. Not the solution for me. Now, keeping in mind that : 1) I want the tank/compressor mounted as a single unit 2) I want to be able to use the tonneau cover. 3) I don't want to have to move it AT ALL once mounted. 4) I want it to be easily accessible. 5) The idea of mounting it all to a flat surface is best. 6) Space to mount it is important 7) It has to look good. As close to full pimp as possible. We started to look for a spot to put it. And here, yet again, the 10" extra the LJ has over the TJ shines through. The tailgate!! 1) Is a flat surface. 2) Tank/compressor fits as a single unit 3) Swings out of the way for easy access to the back. 4) No effect on the tonneau cover 5) Permanent mount 6) LOTS of space due to the long wheelbase 7) Looks pimp. We have a winnah!! Let's go back to 5) and 7) for a moment shall we? The tank as it comes from VIAIR has a bracket attached to mount the tank to a flat surface, but nowhere to mount the compressor. Shit. I can't weld, have some vision of how things should look, but have zero fab skills. I need a compressor mount to the tank, a strong, permanent mount for the tank to the tailgate, and on top of that, it has to look pimp. I need someone with vision who can weld superlatively, overbuilds, thinks laterally when faced with a fabrication obstacle, is anal about the work, and who can fab something that will do everything I want. PLUS... can make the whole thing look pimp. ;D Hmmm. After some thinking I started to look for just such a person... He was standing with his head in the fridge. How easy was that? We have been working on this every night this week and finally have something all squared away. Jan is coming to wire it in tomorrow (he is a wiring enthusiast now), and any and all are invited to the GarageMahal tomorrow to : Marvel at Scott's mad fab skillz, Contemplate Jan's wiring enthusiasm, Appreciate or castigate me for my total lack of wiring/fabrication ablities, as I do the little things that fall inside my tiny mechanical aptitudes. The excitement starts at 10h00. My apologies on the dearth of pix at the moment (they will come when we are all done). I had to use my words instead. Many thanks to Scott because shit like this just does not happen without you.

I'm thinking I like Beer tommorrow. we need to run wire to the battery. how many amps does that thing use, or how big is the wire on the leads? Is it just a pos and neg? is there a relay with the kit? Maybe I should look up the kit. got a link? edit: holy sheet, need a part #, there are a bazzillion of them. duoble edit: www.viaircorp.com/Schematics/oba_wd.pdfeasy! triple edit! : www.viaircorp.com/10005.html. wire gauge and amps shown. thx for the info. ;D We'll need to tap into the dash lights, and run a wire for the switch too. Pick a spot for the gauge/switch pod yet?

VIAIR part number is 10007. I have 25' of the 8 guage wire the manufacturer recommends for the battery hookup. Everything is in the kit. Scott has any connections that you might need for the wire. I have the guage bracket all squared away for location and painted. I also have the tank almost all painted. It's hanging in the GarageMahal as we speak. Have some additional painting to do on the tank, but will get that done tonight and tomorrow before you come by. Name your beer.

This is a way to keep track of the things that happen to the LJ as it evolves. Enjoy. Thanks for reading/commenting.

We'll need to tap into the dash lights, and run a wire for the switch too. Pick a spot for the gauge/switch pod yet? Yessir. All squared away. It will sit low by the shifter in front of the small tray. Shifter clears, room for you to hook up the guage and switch. Had to mod the pod a little, but it's all good.
