I'm still liking the LJ idea and actively looking for one that isn't over $10k. The comments on the jk possibly being junk are very valid. I won't know that until I see it but I'm really not sure if it is worth all the hassle and additional cost whether it is junk or not. So, what I'm trying to do is figure out a cost for getting the darn thing here as that is an additional cost that I won't see if I can find a local bashed jk or, even better, an LJ that was only driven to church on Sunday . On another note: Looking at the NSJC trail run pictures, I think there's a bit of BS flowing here because there are some very sweet rigs in the pictures that didn't get that way for free . I'm game to do whatever they did if it is cheaper than the wish list tossed out in the beginning of this thread. The whole idea behind tapping into this thread was to find ways of building up a solid rig without dropping $160k like this bozo. www.jk-forum.com/showthread.php?47578-Holy-h!T-...-110K-Jeep/page7

It's just rare around here for someone to even consider spending that kind of money in less than a few years. There are virtually no rigs around like you describe, and anything even close have been built over time.
We've all seen the hype of the big American forums and some of the credit card builds there, but this is NS, and not only a small have not Province, but a small forum of Jeepers who by nature are frugal. Most builds here have been out of pocket budget builds over time. The number of 5K rigs on this forum far outweigh the 20k + rigs, better than 10:1 I'd bet.
I continually shop for deals, repo's, salvage, whatever. I have never seen a damaged rusty TJ go for less than 3K in an NS salvage yard, or even this side of Ontario for that matter.I've seen TJ's that would take a reciprocating saw just to look at the engine for way more than that. Maybe if you have someone in the right place you can do better.
If you find a JK for 3K that isn't burnt to a crisp buy it!
Another consideration is the pending lift laws, you have to keep that in the back of your mind. If you plan for this to be your daily driver and it won't pass inspection you need to have the funds to park it and buy something else. Something a lot of us have to consider. In the end an off road toy is just a toy.

Looking at the NSJC trail run pictures, I think there's a bit of BS flowing here because there are some very sweet rigs in the pictures that didn't get that way for free . Not free, but not one rig on this forum has anywhere near the kind of $$ list of parts in the first post. Vast majority are on stock axles to start with. A couple have V8's and bigger (stock, 1ton) axlehousings. The rockcrawling buggy stuff is all local homemade, there are some coilovers/airshocks. No aftermarket T-cases, just home made doublers or low gear sets. No aftermarket housings. None would be considered to be high dollar machines. You can run with the vast majority of the members of this forum on 33's and 35's and still be streetable and reliable, and keep up. Its non-competitive. One of the simplest questions to ask you would be - what tire size do you want to run? It dictates everything else.

I'm open to any ideas on "a better way" ... especially anything that involves saving big $$$. I completely agree on starting from the tire size and working up from there. This will be my 4th 4x4 : - Ramcharger on 35" Ground Hawgs - CJ5 on 32's with ARBs - 4Runner on 33" Hankook MTRs all of them have been buried deep at one time or another. I'd really like to do a "go big or go home" ride so this one will sit on 38's. I've just got my wife on-side (I had to reno a bathroom & paint a bedroom ... small price to pay) so it's not like I got $20k just sitting around . For some reason I'm pulling down a lot of stick on all the cash I'm supposedly going to need to spend but I've seen precious few ideas on how to save money!!! As far as really helpful info I've gotten so far: #1 : Find a good LJ instead of a jk. I'm looking!! The electronics in the jk don't scare me (it's one of the few things I'm good at) but I do miss the simplicity of my old CJ5. I'd probably re-wire most everything from the dash to the radiator anyway (wire is cheap, so's my time). The LJ would also be great in that it gets me the I6 that I am looking for. Not a big fan of V6's - if you're going to have all that extra complexity, may as well go for a small v8 and have power to spare. (my 2 cents) #2 : Ditch the mega-$$$$ Currie axles and buy some old 1 Ton axles. I've seen the Blue Baby build and it is very impressive but I'm worried that I'll end up spending just as much at the end of the day for machine shops to do all the suspension mod welding and then I still might have some horror-show binding or alignment issues. I'd like to have some names of all these fab shops that are being mentioned so I can have a talk with them. #3 : TH350 Tranny instead of the 400. Sounds like the 350 would have plenty of strength and would be cheaper. I'm still listening.

I narrow axles, build doublers (including cutting new splines), bumpers, tie rods, suspension links, etc.
Jan (Creepy) has a plasma table and can cut anything you want out of plate.

Most of us do all our own builds and repairs . Paying for fab work is expensive , and most builds are done over months , sometimes years . Here is my build , I started with a $500 jeep , and when I was done , I was into it for $8000 , and its still not really finished . Phase 2 will prob be done this winter nsjc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fab&action=display&thread=26502

Super busy hunting for the truck now. There are a lot of very expensive jk's and very few LJs around. I've got a few interesting leads on jk's around my budget but they are all in Ontario and they are all damaged in some way.
Anyone somebody around Toronto that would be willing to scope out a used jk for me? What about Montreal?
The only sensible LJ I've seen is in NB but it is way out of reach ($$$) for me. Too bad, looks like a nice truck.
