maybe... hopefully for Jam. speaking of which. after discovering that cancer in the frame after painting, so I cut out another section and fabbed a replacement section. I also cut a piece of 2x4x1/4" and tacked it into place on the back, which will be my new rear bumper. cut my ends and started welding on my new d-rings. they are 1" trailer tie-down rings. they have a holding strength of 15,600lb's. I also cut out a hole for a piece of receiver tubing to fit in. I should be able to grab a section of that from work for nothing. photos to follow maybe tomorrow. hope to have the bumper all but finished tomorrow.

old metal, this side wasn't too bad, but was getting thin, so out with the old. and in with the new. had a little more work to do to this side, it had a hole through the side from the rust. I missed it before sand blasting, because the pit was filled with rust. this is what I have for a bumper. I made it as short as I could, so it is about 48" end to end. the d-rings are 1" rings with thew weld-on tabs. they are rated for a safe working load of 15,600 lb's, major overkill, but it won't hurt anything. I cut an opening for receiver tube, I plan to pick that up today or tomorrow, and drill it out at work. and here is a shot of the xj springs. they need to come apart and be cleaned off, and painted up again, I also need to get some tube or pipe that has a 1.25 ID to use for my rear bushings, and then I can make my perches to weld on to the bumper for my shackles. things are coming along, slowly but surely.

finally have some update stuff. the rear bumper is finished, I eventually picked up some receiver stock, and put that together. the frame was flipped and everything was welded on the underside, and all the welds were cleaned up, and painted a bit. here is a shot of the rear with leafs and axles in place. i used a couple of ratchet straps to suck it down a bit, so it should be close to ride height, maybe an inch or two either way, but this was so I could see what I had for clearance between the axle and gas tank skid. lots of room. here is a shot of the front end. I'm keeping it sprung under for a bit more stability, so I won't need a sway bar as badly. I have a bit of a work bench set up on the frame right now, as space is a bit limited with all of the junk and parts laying around. my work bench will actually be my tranny and t-case skid. it is 3/8" plate. I know it's overkill, but I got a big sheet of it for free, so I decided to just use it. and I finally pulled the engine inside the doors a week ago, and decided to pull the manifolds off so I could replace my missing rear-most manifold bolt. but I found out that one of the PO's had tried to fix it themselves, and fawked it completely, and drilled it out crooked, and off into the casting. [IMG i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo113/imasoldier13/jeep%20rebuild/IMG_7948.jpg[/IMG]so now the head is off, and I have to find another one. BUT!!! lucky for me we have an old 2.5 from an early-mid 80's CJ out in the parts pile, so I went out and pulled it off, and brought it in to have a look at. but it is too rusty to be bothered with. I'd have to swap all of the valves and springs, keepers, rockers, and pushrods from my engine to it, in order to be able to use it, and I"m not wasting my time doing that if I can find another head that is all ready to bolt on. so here I am. today I'm picking up my new u-bolts from Tracy when I go to the valley chapter meeting, and maybe later this afternoon I'll have my axles bolted i place. I picked up half a dozen new wheel studs for the rear passenger side axle, and when I went to install them, discovered that they gave me the wrong ones, I think I got 1/2" studs, with a 5/8" press in thing. mine were supposed to be 7/16" with a slightly larger than 7/16" press in spot. also, I need to find some tires and rims to borrow for a bit so I can roll this thing around some.

if you were closer, I'd take your offer. I don't get out of the valley too often though. I'll keep it in mind for the next time I'm up, because I can't really turn down a spare engine.
UPDATE: got my u-bolts today at the chapter meeting, and they fawked them up completely. I told them "I have a 3" tube, so with the springs, I'd need them to be 6-7" long." he told me the shortest they could do was 12" so I said "that's fine, I'll cut off the extra". they bent me up 12" u-bolts. 12" before they were bent. now I have 4 1/2" tall u-bolts that I can't do sweet fawk all with. really discouraging. I was hoping to have the axles secured this afternoon.

Lookin good Dan.Why not just repair that fawked up bolt hole in the head? Could make up an insert with a 5/8" thread O.D. and the proper I.D. thread. Might need someone with a mill to drilll and tap the head for ya.

I thought about that actually, Rue, but for the price of another used head, or a complete engine, i can just get what I need that way. I just don't have the money to pay for machining, or else I'd go that route.

fawking u-bolt guys. I'm gonna rant a little, I know there are some out there somewhere who aren't dicks. I have tried every which way to give them info. it seems they are the moodiest bitchy macbitchersteins in the spring shop, and YOU are a moron, always.
i got into it one time with one of them, gave him the info, he confirmed it was what he needed, then he made something else. He gave me the look "you fawking idiot" I picked it out of the garbage and compared it to my drawing that he just agreed to make. He made it wrong. Showed him and I thought he was going to kill me for DARING to question his u-bolt bending skills. They can run the machine fine, they just can't fawking read or listen OR give instructions as to what dims HE needs to make the u-bolt.
AARRGG! u-bolts. I hate 'em.
ps - you are missing a head. you need 2. ;D

I deal with spring shops in moncton and they are really good ..but the last u bolts i got were exactly what i wanted....untill .i went to tighten 1 down..the threads were shorter than the rest!!..I guess they just grabbed the proper lenght to bend but didn't notice the thread length...
