Well i had bought some toyota axles site unseen and i got took . I also bought this from Mudmagnet but i'm not ready to 4 link just yet so I cleaned up the rusted rear with a wire wheel found a hole . I'll weld it up and I'm going to armor it anyways . cut some tube ripped it in two drilled a few holes clamped them on burned some wire little bit at a time as not to warp the housing finished up welding the tubes and added new end pieces next up . i'm going to shave the bottom . I'll add pics when I get to that .

Looks good. I wouldn't worry too much about the hole in the diff cover, you'll be plating over that anyway. The tubes had to be done tho, the repair looks great. I'd be perfectly confident in that.
(ps - your shop is really cool in each backround pic I see, nice!)

well , i,ve always had to be careful when working on axles that the stands didn't slip off the table so , today before i started the shave , i did some fabbing on the table . started by welding these on . then welded these up more holes bent some pins welded on a pin stop [/URL
much better
Now on with the axle fabbin . first thing i did was move the filler plug up as the axle will be tipped up more . then I cut the bottom out of the axle big hole replaced the bottom with 1/4" plate. tacked in . ready for the flapper disc . nice smooth bottom . added some ring armor So , here is the before . and after . all in all I gained 1 inch of clearance under the diff . same as going from a 35" tire to a 37 .

Looks good.
Neat trick if you have the diff out - use button head cap screws instead of the diff studs. Put them in from the back. then the studs will have heads on them, and never pull thru the housing.

thanks Jan , have some in the barn ready to install . Bought them after I read your thread . Diff has to come out to finish welding things up from the inside . just to make sure there are no leaks .

finally got around to cleaning the axle . It was alot dirtier than i would have thought Had to come up with a way to get in the tubes, I had one of these extentions in a brill bit kit i bought at Home depot . and a wire wheel added them together stuck it in my pencel grinder worked like a charm thru down a coat of paint , done for now .
