What about the vw 1.8t gas five valves per cylinder–a total of 20 valves, and all versions use a turbocharger. They make good power Yeah the 1.8Ts can make some good power, especially when you get in to chipping them etc. Find yourself one with a blown up Automatic transmission for a few hundred and go. There will be more than one wire to run it though... .

They are in Passat, golf and jetta and maybe more vw You should be able to run one from either a Passat or a Golf/Jetta. They share the same bellhousing pattern but the engine is mounted longitudinally in a Passat while transversely in a Golf/Jetta. Passats are worthless and may actually be better for you/your buggy.

They all are thinking of traditional rock crawling, where you don't want wheel spin. I don't feel inclined to sign up to reply, but it should be mentioned to them that it sounds like he wants to be able to turn his tires faster on the rocks for heat and traction

Spool 'er up!!!! Its just the nature of the conditions of the trails here. need wheelspeed a lot.

Looked up the power on the vw1.8, kinda surprised me. Torque: 166 ft-lbs. @ 1950 rpm Horsepower: 170 hp @ 5900 rpm Torque is nice and low, and should be pretty good power in my lite buggy. Now just have to find a cheap one. And figure out what I need to make the ECM work.

Early Passats and early Audi A4's apparently have the same engine (the one with the throttle cable). They started in ~'97 and they too come up cheap now & then.

I don't know Rue... a couple of actual diesel nerds have chimed in with some pretty good advice - The 1.6 is not the best diesel out there for making power. The large turbo takes longer to spool (I know I have one) and there are better options.
If I can get down with a couple of my buddies here shortly they can share their experiences as they both have had some higher HP diesels (one has an AWD TDI '84 Jetta coupe which hauls ass)

Wonder if I could put the smaller turbo off of a 1.9TD?
