Put in a 1.9 cam plate in the injection pump... Turn your boost diaphram.... Crank up the fuel .. Use merc or gti nozzels ...get a 14 mm pump head off a rotary injection pump off a 4bt......etc

I ran a 1.9 td with the 1.6 boost pin and 1.6 turbo ., turned the fuel and boost to 20psi . Fmic kept from heat soaking the turbo and keeping the egt down abit

I've put better head bolts and head gasket in the engine already. Took the stock blowoff valve off and plugged the spot where it was. I've turned the boost pin to the most aggressive side. There's more I can do, just need some time. It's hard where I'm livin now, can't just change something and good for a run and see what it did. I'm probably just goin to leave it alone until ltr on and play with it a bit more. Too many other things on the go right at the moment.
I wish I could get it too idle a little bit low, seams like its a little fast. I can back the idle screw right off and it won't go any lower.
I'm not sure if I would need a lot more power, but I would like it to come to life faster. It makin enough torque to twist off driveshafts now. I really like how simple of a set up it is, and it crawls really good. Just need to find a way to get the coal goin quicker.

The more you " turn up the fuel" the faster it idles... A problem with that pump.Did you shim the goverener springs?

One of the guys I plan to bring out with me knows these engines quite well and he'll have some suggestions for you.
Do you have the cold-start assist lever (behind the pump, between the pump and the block) engaged by chance? that ups your idle a fair bit as well.

any vw/audi 4-banger will bolt up to your bell housing adapter like this little 1.6TD (which had the lowest specific power output of all...). Dewie mentioned the 1.8T -- a chipped ecm for that engine will provide about 215chp / 245 ft*lbs, bandwidth from 2500 rpm to 7200 rpm. nowadays, you can scour ebay and get extremely cheap turbo manifolds for T25/T28/T3/T4 turbos and strap a larger snail on there. popular aftermarket setup is a gt2860 (gtrs) turbo - will produce 300 whp / 325 ft*lbs reliably on stock internals. will still spool about the same as the stock turbo as well. alternative is audi TT 225 (k04-020/-022/-023 turbo which will give about 270chp/300+ft*lbs and will spool before the stock vw turbo.
lots of options. as dewie said, more than 1 wire for running her, but can double your torque/hp easily and is actually a lighter engine.
awesome work on that chassis - i know very little about these things, but am amazed at what they can do! i can help with any wire harness/ecu issues if you choose to go this route - i have recently retrofitted a 1.8t with a massive turbo and modern chassis harness into my little tiny 1990 gti (2200 lbs + 400+whp + 6-speed manual = every ditch in cape breton).

I was wondering how long it would take someone from "the other side" to show up over here I'm glad it's you Jeff. Rue Jeff knows these engines inside and out, has built quite a few of them and knows what parts work with what. If you want someone local (if Cape Breton can REALLY be considered Local ) to be a sounding board he's your guy for sure.

It is a VE pump correct? For the idle, just re-index the throttle shaft. Are the bosh Cummins pump different? I have doubled my fuel and have factory idle? Show me a top shot of the pump. I am not familiar with the VW stuff.

If ya need it to spool quicker, turn up the smoke screw, IE (Pre boost fuel)and tighten up your AFC spring. Lean it out a bit and it will spool faster. Have you turned up the fuel screw?, advance timing?

I haven't had much time to play with the engine yet, that'll have to wait till things slow down some. Spent the day gettin the buggy ready for the crawl. Got the rear drive shaft fixed back up. Twisted the stock 2.5" Toyota driveshaft off the I had in the rear. It was a pretty light walled piece of tubing. Sleeved it with a piece of 2.75"x .093" wall, I'll be surprised if the little vw twists this off. I figured these old Krawler needed a little help. Tires are getting old and hard. Think that they are at lease 7 years old now. So, I puttin the grooving iron to them, should help I hope. Got some panels made for the sides I think it's ready for the crawl.

Well, decided to keep the little 1.6 for another year. I ended up playin with the pump some, and that made the little engine come to life. It'll run down the road up in high range now, and feel pretty good. Still no hill killer thou.. LOL. The changes that I've made so far, turned the max fuel screw in 1 1/2 turns, turned the boost pin to the most aggressive side, turned the smoke screw down 2 turns and turned the star wheel up 1/2 a turn so far. Played with the waste gate some too, runnin about 20 psi of boost now. Next mod is to get a little deeper into the pump and mod the governer. Just not sure if I'm goin to shim the main spring or just replace it with a solid spacer. I read of people doin both ways. Think I might need a tack before this mod. I've started the winter mods now. Got to try and keep up with these guys and the big tires and engines Got Creepy to cut me out rings for bead locks. I drilled the holes and weld a piece of 5/16" bar around the outer ring. Rounded a piece of 1/2"x1/8" flat bar to go between the rings to act as a anti cone ring. I ran all this season at 5 psi, and never lost a bead, came close once. But I feel that the buggy is lite enough that I can get down around 3 psi, hopin that I can get a little farther down the trail. Guess I just have to wait until spring.
