One other thing that I noticed was that in the fuse panel behind the glove box. Fuse #20 - Transmission: Manual - Clutch Interlock Switch Bypass Auto-matic - Ignition Starter Circuit was missing. This has not been there since I bought the jeep last year so I'm not sure if that's an issue? Fuse #4 is also missing but that's the Door Switch Defeat and I would rather not listen to that annoying door chime, lol.

Thanks James. Jan, sorry for the confusion. When I first checked the voltage at the small terminal it was 12.15 then it dropped to 11.21. I posted before realizing I didn't have a proper ground. So I re-checked again and it stayed around 12.12 - 12.15. On the battery terminals it's 12.44 then when I turn the key it drops to 12.25. Before I did all of this I pulled the battery, cleaned it up and used a fine grit sandpaper and made the posts shine. Same thing for the inside ring on each cable. I also used the sandpaper on the battery cable end for the starter. The solenoid is new so all those connections are good as well. All of my fuses are in good shape and the relays are good too. When I turn the key the action is smooth and deliberate the same as it has always been. I also tried jumping the small terminal to the terminal with the braided wire that's connects to the starter and it turned the fan slowly. Then I tapped the starter with a hammer as I jumped it and the starter motor sped up but not to the speed needed to start it up. Then at that time in the spot opposite of the small terminal there is a ball of solder and it all if a sudden spit out a small stream of gas. A hole formed in the centre of it and what looks like a little wire is in the centre. So I just might have cooked my solenoid? This aside; if I understand you correctly it sounds like my problem is still my starter. Would I be correct?

Another thing I forgot to mention is that when it does crank over the fan moves very slowly.

Ok I did the jump test but it cranked on the small post and the big post that has the wire from the starter. Not the one that has the battery cable connected. I checked the voltage in the small terminal and got 12 volts right away but it dropped to 11.21 right away. So if I read the posts right this is looking like the ignition thing? How do I fix this?

This is something that I just thought about. My key doesn't lock in the ignition, you can pull the key while it's running. While on the trail it sometimes falls out when I hit a hard bump and it did that night. Could this cause a problem with the plastic thing in the ignition?

I don't have a meter but I can borrow one off the ETs at work. Will check the voltage on the small terminal tomorrow. Is there a link to check the plastic ignition thingy?

Well I took out the starter and we hooked it up to a battery, the starter pushes forward but doesn't spin. I hooked it up in accordance with Jan's instructions (small terminal and big terminal with the braided wire) and the above was the result. After this I am assuming that the problem is the starter now.

I was jumping with the two bigger terminals on the solenoid. One the power from the battery and the other connect to the starter with an inch long covered wire. As for the whirring sound it sounded like it was coming from the starter.

I have installed a new solenoid and a starter that is know to run and I still get nothing when I turn the key. It's the same response I got before this happened when I wouldn't press the clutch when starting the jeep. I'm now at a loss as to what could be wrong. Anyone have ideas as to what I can check next?

I have a brand new solenoid on the starter now and it's still not working. When I turn the key the same thing happens as if you don't press the clutch. All cables and connections are clean. Had that problem before and it's now the first thing I do with electrical problems.

On Saturday durning the night run I shut the Rubi off and then it wouldn't start. We jumped the terminals and heard a whirring sound but no crank. We got it started by popping the clutch and made it out of the trail and home. Thinking it was the solenoid I replaced it with a new one. Still nothing when I turn the key and just a whirring sound when I jump the terminals. I then disassembled the starter and cleaned it and checked the magnets and bushings and everything was in good shape. Put it all back together and the same results. I'm starting to think that it isn't the starter at all but something else. Anyone have any ideas? Never had a problem until this incident.

Last night on the night run I pooched my starter. I tried calling around for one this morning and the only place I got a hold of was CT who said $190! What are they made if gold? I've bought starters before and they didn't cost no where near as much as that. So if anyone on here has a starter that would work for my 03 Rubi I would like to buy it from you today.

Weird. I don't see any difference at all. I always felt the wind more with the soft top and now with the hard top on not as much and it feels a little more stable to me. I don't know maybe it's the added weight and it will take a day or two to get used to, lol.

I also took the soft top off for the winter. There sure is a difference in how it handles between the two tops, lol.

I agree with Len learn to drive the standard. With a Rubicon it would be even easier to learn on due to the lower gear ratios. When I bought my Rubi last year it was more than 20 years since I drove a standard (aside from a failed and scary attempt on a dark, winding narrow road around the shore of Loch Ness Scotland, lol). I had no problems picking it back up even on the hills. Plus all the money you save from not doing the swap you can put towards "enhancements" on the Jeep.
